Unexpected late night showers wreak havoc with drainage, power infrastructure in Karachi

KARACHI: The southern metropolis woke up to a pleasant Tuesday morning owing to unexpected rainfall last night.

Some areas received only a drizzle while heavy rainfall was reported from Shahrah-e-Faisal, I.I. Chundrigar road, Saddar, Numaish, Garden, Tariq road and surrounding areas.

The short lived but heavy downpour left many roads inundated due to inadequate drainage, causing distress to citizens. Water accumulated on MA Jinnah road, Shara-e-Faisal, Saddar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Federal B Area, Arts Council as well as on the roads surrounding the Sindh Governor House.

Due to a drainage line collapse near 5-Star Chowrangi multiple cars parked on the road were submerged in water. Residents were forced to rescue their vehicles through their own efforts.

The Sindh government declared a 'rain emergency' springing the administration into action. Jam Khan Shoro, Minister for Local Government visited the affected areas late last night to review efforts to drain inundated streets to minimize inconvenience to the citizens.

Meanwhile the Chief Minister Sindh, Syed Qaim Ali Shah instructed Commissioner Karachi and the City Administrator to have the water drained at the earliest.

Lights Out

Many areas plunged into darkness after 58 feeders of the KElectric power company tripped. Areas affected by power outages include Gulistan-e-Johar, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Al-Falah Society and parts of DHA as well.

According to KElectric, power had been restored to majority of the affected areas by 8:30AM on Tuesday morning.
