RAWALPINDI: Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi Omar Jahangir has announced that any motorcyclist found not wearing a helmet will not be refuelled at any fuel station.

“Any motorcyclist not wearing helmet will not be refuelled at any fuel station in Rawalpindi after 1-12-2018. Directions have been issued to all fuel stations,” the deputy commissioner tweeted.

He also tweeted a picture of a stall outside the office of the City Traffic Officer (CTO) with helmets.

“Helmets available on control rates for the facilitation of Motorcyclists outside CTO office Rawalpindi. Please wear a helmet for yourself and your loved ones,” the DC posted.

The move was hailed by Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry who said, “Brilliant idea, in Lahore implementation of helmet law led to 63 per cent reduction in head injuries, this idea is even better,” with a thumbs up.

Earlier, CTO Lahore wrote a letter to the deputy commissioner asking him to impose a complete ban on refuelling motorcyclists without helmets.

According to a spokesperson of the City Traffic Police, the decision was taken to minimise the number of causalities in accidents involving motorcyclists.

“We have witnessed that motorcyclists not wearing helmets received fatal head injuries..,” he said.

The CTP, on the directive of Lahore High Court, had launched a campaign to make helmets compulsory for motorcyclists, he added.
