British MP who took loan for son’s funeral has her fee waived off

A British Member of Parliament who couldn’t afford to pay for her funeral said she was “delighted” to have her fee waived by the undertaker company.

Co-op Funeralcare is UK’s largest undertaker firm and provides free burial services for all children’s funerals. It is expanding its free service to cover 16 and 17-year-olds too.

"This compassionate response by the Co-op reaffirms my faith in the funeral industry that has always maintained great respect and compassion at this most dreadful time, said Carolyn Harris, who had to take a loan for her eight-year-old son’s burial.

Harris’ son was killed in a road accident in 1989. She is now creating awareness for an end to council burial charges for children.

According to the undertaker company, the average funeral cost in 2015 was £3,817.
