Joint opposition claims govt not serious over Panama Leaks probe

ISLAMABAD: The joint opposition on Monday lashed the government over its non seriousness to resolve the questions raised by the Panama Leaks.

In a press conference held, Pakistan People’s Party leader Aitezaz Ahsan said that the Panama Papers came out on April 3. A few days later in an address to the nation he presented himself for accountability, he said.

On 24 April a letter was written to the Supreme Court which was later returned, he said.

We presented our 15 ToRs on May 3, Aitezaz said, giving a blow by blow account of the entire issue.

He said that on May 16 the prime minister appeared in the Sindh Assembly, while on May 17  the parliamentary committee was formed.

“The government does not want to make a legislation over the Panama Leaks. Instead it wants a legislation which can probe the death of Osama bin Laden. The government wants to put forward 100,000 in the judicial commission,” he said.

The economy has suffered due to offshore companies, he said. “In corruption cases people under trial have to prove where they got their assets from. Whether their money is ill-gotten or not?,” he said.

Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that the government is trying to give the impression that they have reached deadlock over one particular point in ToRs. “If the government does not adopt a positive attitude more meetings are fruitless,” he said.

Of the nine opposition parties five attended the press conference. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement and Awami National Party did not take part in the press conference.
