KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) member Izhar Ahmed’s victory as a chairman in the last phase of  the local body elections from the West district on Thursday was declared null and void.

In a recount of votes, the final result was changed.

Out of the 36 votes received by the candidate, 24 votes turned out to be spoilt.

Karachi Ittehad's Asif Khan emerged victorious with 31 votes.

Tension had flared up at District West polling station following announcement of unofficial results for chairman and vice chairman.

Karachi Ittehad had refused to accept the results for the district and carried out a sit-in outside DC office. Party’s candidate Asif Khan, who had lost to Izharuddin then, claimed that 20 votes had been tampered. A total of 67 votes were registered at the polling venue.

Karachi Ittehad is made up of PPP, PML(N), PTI, ANP, Jamat-e-Islami and JUI.
