ATC extends remand of 38 MQM workers for five days

KARACHI: An Anti-terrorism court on Friday extended remand of 38 Muttahaida Qaumi Movement (MQM) workers for five days in police custody.
According to the latest details, the suspects are to be presented before the ATC again on Wednesday, August 31.

Earlier, the ATC was unable to hand over a two-day remand to the MQM workers after a Rangers prosecutor expressed his reservations.
Rangers prosecutor Mushtaq Jehangiri had told the court that the defense lawyers were being given a chance to plead this case which included charges related to terrorism.

The Rangers lawyer had demanded that the MQM workers including leaders Shahid Pasha, Qamar Mansoor and Kanwar Naveed be remanded for at least one week.

The accused including MQM leaders were presented in the court today in two cases related to murder, treason and arson.

The workers were taken into custody over allegations of ransacking an ARY News office after being incited by the MQM founder to violence. At least one person died and eight others were injured during the violent attacks in which around 2,000 party workers participated.

An anti-terrorism court on Thursday had remanded them for one day in police custody. Television footage available with Geo News showed Qamar Mansoor and Kanwar Naveed chanting 'Pakistan Zindabad' and 'Pak Fauj Zindabad' slogans.
