KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Farooq Sattar said on Tuesday that rivals can raze MQM offices but cannot break the party’s mandate.

Talking to the media following the oath-taking ceremony for new Karachi mayor Waseem Akhtar today, Farooq Sattar said that the key to Karachi had been handed over to Waseem Akhtar and soon he would be handed prison keys as well.

Earlier today, Farooq Sattar said a lot of people in Karachi were wrongly thinking the party had weakened. He also said that Karachi was finally getting its heir after seven years.

“We will bring foreign investments into the city,” the MQM leader said, adding that Karachi would be made an exemplary city.

Farooq Sattar also said that cleanliness is the biggest issue facing the city and that problems would be solved on a priority basis.

He added that democracy is incomplete without the system of local governments.

Two more offices of MQM were razed in Karachi on Monday, taking the overall tally of demolished party unit and sector offices to 32. Earlier, party offices were pulled down in Landhi, Lines Area, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, New Town, Kharadar, Meetha Dar, Railways Colony, Bhains Colony, Sachchal, Airport, Tariq bin Ziad Society and Quaidabad.

Law enforcement agencies have also sealed over 200 party offices in a crackdown triggered by an inflammatory speech by party chief Altaf Hussain and ensuing violence in the megapolis on August 22.
