KARACHI: On his first day in office deputy mayor Arshad Vohra visited officials at the old KMC building and promised that Karachi will soon become the best city of the world.

"But it will take time," he added.

Speaking to the media he said that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has barely any resources.  However he said that he will not impose any new taxes on the public. “But we will improve the existing tax system.”

He added that he will try to improve tax recovery. “For launching mega projects we will try to bring in foreign funding.”

Vohra said that he will try to establish an office in Civic Centre as the location can easily be approached by citizens.

Karachi’s mayor Waseem Akhtar is behind the bars on charges related to terrorism. He will run the city from prison however analysts claim his powers are limited.

The mayor does not have powers to control crucial municipal bodies like the Karachi Development Authority, Malir Development Authority, Karachi Building Control Authority, Water Board or the Solid Waste Management, Geo News reported.

Meanwhile mayor and deputy mayors at Sukkur did not have an office to sit at on their first day.

The newly elected officials formed a make-shift tent office and assumed duties.
