KARACHI: Six million children in Sindh are out of school, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah accepted on Tuesday.

The province might have led others in passing article 25-a in the assembly, a law which recognizes free education for children aged between five and 16 as a fundamental right, but it has lagged behind when it comes to its implementation.

The chief minister while addressing a seminar on education said that the state of education in Sindh was being dealt with on an emergency basis. “Educating children is our foremost priority,” he said.

He added that in the provincial budget education department gets a lion’s share. Experts however argue that these funds remain largely unutilized.

“We need to provide basic facilities to each school in Sindh,” he said, adding that he had given his own powers to the education minister so that he is able to tackle the pressing issue.
