KARACHI: A policeman was killed and another wounded after their vehicle came under attack by unidentified assailants here on Friday, police said.

The policemen were on their way back after acquiring remand of two accused - Imtiaz rind and Khalid alias Bangali - from a court, officials said. The assailants, who were awaiting the police team, ambushed the vehicle as it appeared on Korangi Causeway.

The incident resulted in killing of one policeman, while the attackers managed a clean getaway from the scene after getting their accomplices freed. Another policeman was left critically wounded in the episode, who was shifted to hospital.

This correspondent has learnt that the under custody accused freed in the ambush, were also charged with the murder of a policeman.

The killing of law enforcers in Karachi has remained to be a common occurring in the past, but it came down with the overall crime as the law enforcement agencies (LEAs), backed by political leadership, launched a crackdown on terrorists and criminals in the megapolis in late 2013.

There has since been a drastic decrease in crimes across Karachi, a city that is home to over 20 million.

Yet scattered attacks like these still take place in the city, but not as often as they occurred in the past.
