Couple killed in Karachi over local jirga's orders

KARACHI: A husband and wife were killed at Shah Latif town after an order from a Jirga.

According to police, the couple Asmat and Irfana had married for love a year ago. They were residents of Orangi Town.

Police has arrested six suspects in the case.

Parliament on October 6 approved bills aimed at the prevention of honour-killings in the country, removing a loophole allowing killers to walk free after being pardoned by family members.

Some 500 women are killed each year in Pakistan at the hands of family members over perceived damage to "honour" that can involve eloping, fraternising with men or any other infraction against conservative values relating to women, according to some reports.

Earlier this year, a Pakistani social media star Qandeel Baloch was also allegedly murdered by her brother in one such incident of honour killing.

Qandeel's killing followed another murder of a British-Pakistani wife, Samia Shahid, in Jhelum – again for the sake of 'honour'.
