Pakistan High Commissioner in New Delhi calls Kashmir 'bone of contention'

NEW DELHI: Pakistan High Commissioner in India Abdul Basit stressed that Kashmir remained the bone of contention between the two neighbouring countries.

He was addressing a ceremony to mark Pakistan Day celebrations where he maintained that Pakistan wanted to solve the Kashmir issue in accordance with the hopes and aspirations of the Kashmiris living in the occupied territory.

He said that states could suppress freedom movements but not eliminate it entirely.

Appreciating the struggles of the father of the nation Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, he said that the country was formed in a brief time period of seven years. He added that the newly formed country faced a plethora of external and internal threats, which were fought off by the nation, and its existence today is nothing short of a miracle.

He said that country will continue to walk the path of success in the coming years.

The 78th Pakistan Day, which marks the Lahore resolution of 1940 where Muslims officially demanded a separate homeland, is being celebrated nationwide today with traditional zeal and fervour.

The day dawned with 31 gun salutes in the federal capital and 21 gun salutes in the provincial capitals, followed by a joint parade of all three forces of the military: Pakistan Army, Navy and Air Force, at Shakarparian Parade Avenue in the federal capital early Thursday morning.
