Two policemen killed, one injured in suspected target killing in Karachi

Investigation under way; Rs2.5 million information reward announced

KARACHI: Two police officers were killed and one "seriously injured" in a firing incident near the Dhoraji area here late Saturday night, police said.

Security officials revealed that a police vehicle was shot at, resulting in the instant deaths of Assistant Sub-Inspector Iftikhar and Head Constable Younus, while another official was injured.

“It looks like a target killing incident for now,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) East Faisal Abdullah noted, adding that all three officers sustained bullet wounds to their torsos.

The SSP said that 12 shells of 9mm and .30 bore pistols were recovered from the site and have been sent for forensics examination, adding that further investigation is under way with the help of CCTV footage and Geo-fencing.

On the other hand, CTD in-charge Raja Umar Khattab, commenting on the matter, explained that the site of attack was the police van's regular spot and the attackers made use of nighttime to escape.

Khattab went on to say that the act was likely perpetrated by terrorists from banned organisations with sleeper cells. 

Karachi police chief Mushtaq Mehar, consequently, announced a Rs2.5 million reward for anyone who comes forward with information on the suspects' identification.

While no one has stepped forward till now in that regard, eyewitnesses did go on to say that there were four suspects on two motorcycles who carried out the attack.
