LONDON: A huge blaze broke out in a hangar at London's Southend Airport on Wednesday, reported the BBC

Eyewitnesses reported seeing "thick black smoke" billowing from the hangar before firefighters reached the scene.

The BBC added that six fire crews tackled the blaze which was reported earlier in the day. The hangar did not have any aircraft parked inside.

Airport staff said flights are continuing to operate and the airport remains open.

An investigation was also launched to determine the cause. The fire service said it is thought the fire started accidentally.

An Essex Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “When firefighters arrived at the scene they reported the large hangar, which is used to livery aeroplanes, was on fire".

“Six fire engines were requested to help tackle the fire.

Firefighters used an aerial ladder platform to pour water on the large building from above.

“London Southend Airport is still open and operating as normal," said a Southend Airport spokeswoman.
