In another incident of lawmen breaking the law, two policemen were suspended in Hyderabad after accusations surfaced that they were involved in extorting money from labourers.

According to sources, police officials on Tuesday approached a group of labourers loading seeds on a truck in Preetabad area of the city.

They demanded extortion money by using the chai pani [bribe] excuse. When the labourers refused they beat them up during which one labourer, Abid Malik, fell and hurt himself. The police then reportedly took Malik with them but he fainted along the way after which they left him at the Civil Hospital.

Later, the owner of the seeds warehouse said the police daily take Rs500 from every truck as extortion.

Once reports of the incident were aired, Hyderabad SSP Pir Mohammad Shah took notice of the incident and launched an inquiry.

The two police officials who asked for the bribe have been suspended, he added.
