SC wraps up suo motu notice in transgender persons’ CNIC case

ISLAMABAD: As work has started on the issuance of national identity cards for transgender persons, the Supreme Court of Pakistan wrapped up the suo motu notice taken over the matter.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar heard the suo-motu notice on Monday.

An additional attorney general, who was present at the hearing, told the court that work has started on the issuance of identity cards for transgender persons, while the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has also declared that Pakistan is the only country to be working on policies for people of the third gender.

The head of committee formed by the court, Dr Sohail Anwar, told the court that UNDP has acknowledged and appreciated the efforts relevant authorities in Pakistan have made for the rights of transgender persons. He added that Pakistan was among the nine countries that have drafted policies for the welfare of transgender persons.

Therefore, the chief justice wrapped up the suo motu notice taken over the matter, adding UNDP’s remarks to the order.

The court announced that report made by the law and justice commission would be made a part of the order, while the provincial governments should continue their work for the transgender persons.
