Work was under way on Wednesday to clear the roads in Naran blocked due to landslides triggered by snowfall and rain.

The operation was initiated by police and National Highway Authority, under which routes were cleared of snow and mud so that tourists could continue their journey.

On the other hand, rain and snowfall stopped in Gilgit-Baltistan region of the country but continued in Muzaffarabad and adjoining areas.

Every year as soon as mercury starts dropping, a large number of people from different parts of the country throng the north of Pakistan to enjoy the view of mountains blanketed in snow.

However, thick layers of snow along the thoroughfares often impedes the journey of tourists, stranding them midway, waiting for help often without food and means of communication.

In April, NHA cleared the snow left by the previous spell of winter on roads in Naran and Kaghan in order to open the thoroughfares for the tourist season.

According to NHA representatives, there were six big and small glaciers between Kaghan and Naran while 13 of them were between Naran and Getidas that had to be cleared.

The glaciers were said to be 80 feet tall and 300 feet wide.

The aforementioned roads were closed for traffic in December 2017 due to heavy snowfall.
