KARACHI: Eye surgeon and former President of Pakistan Ophthalmologists Association, Dr Sharif Hashmani said Pakistan is way ahead in the field of ophthalmology (eye care and treatment) as compared to other countries in the region.

"This, however, must not be any source of complacency as proper eye care and prevention of related diseases are prerequisites for general well being of the masses," Dr Hashmani told young doctors attending a workshop held here under the aegis of World Memon Organisation(Pakistan chapter).

Emphasizing the significance of regular eye checkup leading to timely or early diagnosis of eye disease, the senior eye specialist said this can easily help patients avert associated expenses, in particular, the cost of hospital stay and treatment.

"Diagnosis at early stages most importantly prevents progression of the disease," Dr Hashmani said reiterating that all modern apparatuses are available in major hospitals of the country.

Pakistani ophthalmologists and eye surgeons were said to be well versed in the application of treatment techniques required for a wide range including injuries, trauma and infection-related conditions.
