Headway in Maulana Samiul Haq murder probe, personal secretary detained

RAWALPINDI: Police have detained the late Maulana Samiul Haq's personal secretary, in a major headway in the murder investigation of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Sami (JUI-S) chief.

According to sources, Ahmed Shah was a person of interest in Haq’s murder, and authorities had been looking for him for the past several weeks after he mysteriously disappeared following the incident. 

The sources said that intelligence agencies took Shah into custody six days ago. He was then handed over to the Rawalpindi police.

Haq, an influential religious scholar and former senator, was stabbed to death while he was resting in his room at his residence in Rawalpindi on November 2.

Last month, police had sought permission from a sessions' judge in Rawalpindi to exhume the body and conduct a post-mortem examination of the slain JUI-S leader's body.
