Sindh govt abolishes public holidays in schools, colleges

KARACHI: The Sindh government on Wednesday decided to abolish public holidays for educational institutes across the province.

In a meeting of Steering Committee of Education Department presided over by provincial education minister Sardar Shah, the committee decided that the new college academic year will begin from August instead of July while summer vacations in schools will be observed in May and June.

Holidays that have been abolished include Kashmir Day (February 5), Pakistan Day (March 23), Independence Day (August 14), Urs of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai (14th Safar), Eid Milad-un-Nabi (11th Rabbiul Awal) and Quaid-e-Azam Day (September 11).

According to a spokesperson for the education minister, during these days, academic activities in school will remain suspended, however, schools will host activities related to the importance of the day to create awareness among the students.

Further, the committee has decided that schools and colleges will start at 8:30am and end at 2pm. Teachers are bound to stay in schools till 3pm.
