RAWALPINDI: A 'qari' — religious teacher — was arrested here from the city Saturday evening after a video of him abusing and assaulting one of his students went viral on social media and police subsequently registered a first information report (FIR) of the incident.

According to police, the 'qari' was identified as Noor Muhammad.

Police said the video of Qari Noor Muhammad — tying one of his students upside down and leaving him hanging there from his feet — is a few months' old. Nevertheless, he has been arrested now, they added.

Shockingly, however, the student and his father said in their statement to the police that the 'qari' was innocent and that it was prank carried out after classes at the madrassah concluded.
