ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan's narrative stood vindicated in the Senate, his special assistant on information and broadcasting, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, said Thursday evening after Senate chairperson Sadiq Sanjrani and deputy chairperson Saleem Mandviwalla survived no-confidence resolutions tabled against them.

Dr Awan noted that the narrative of PM Imran has been vindicated, as a majority of the Senators had rejected the Opposition's move to remove Sanjrani.

Earlier in the day, the Opposition's no-confidence resolution against Senate chair Sanjrani failed to receive the 53 votes required for his removal.

Some 50 votes were received in favour of the resolution, with five being rejected.

At the start of the session, 64 senators had stood up in support of the motion to table the no-confidence resolution.

The no-confidence motion had been submitted against the Senate chairperson for the first time in the history of Pakistan, demanding he resign from his post.

A similar resolution tabled by the government against Senate deputy chair Mandviwalla also failed, receiving only 32 votes.

Opposition parties had nominated Hasil Bizenjo as their candidate for the post of Senate chairperson.
