QUETTA: At least four people were martyred and 22 injured on Friday when a bomb exploded inside a mosque in Quetta's Kuchlak area, police said.

According to initial investigation by the police, the explosion was carried out with an improvised explosive device (IED) which was planted inside the mosque.

"The blast was carried out through a timed device that was planted under the wooden chair of the prayer leader," Quetta’s chief of police Abdul Razzaq Cheema told Reuters.

Provincial police chief Mohsin Hassan Butt also confirmed the incident and casualty figures at the mosque.

The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment, while an emergency was at Civil Hospital Quetta and other medical facilities in the city.

Law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area while the bomb disposal squad was summoned to the location.

The bombing was the latest violence in a string of recent attacks in Balochistan's provincial capital.

In July, five people including two policemen were martyred in a blast near a police station in Quetta, a week after a similar explosion killed two people.
