KARACHI: The provincial assembly on Friday adopted the controversial Sindh Criminal Prosecution Service (SCPS) bill amid uproar from the opposition benches paving the way for the government to withdraw any subjudice case in any court including anti-terrorism courts ATCs.
The members of opposition parties including MQM, PML-F and PTI strongly protested against the bill and tore apart copies of the bill.
Khurram Sher Zaman of PTI said the bill was passed to protect thieves and cronies of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
Criticizing the Sindh government, Functional League’s Nusrat Sahar Abbasi likened the provincial assembly to PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari’s personal drawing room. She said the ruling party had introduced ‘black laws’ for their personal gains.
MQM’s Khawaja Izharul Hassan said the bill was passed by the Sindh government to hide its corruption.
Meanwhile defending the SCPS bill, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah in Jacobabad said the act was the need of the hour and would ‘further’ strengthen the prosecution system in the province.
He assured that criminals will not benefit from the bill.
