Legendary Urdu novelist Intizar Hussain dies at 92

Hussain was a renowned novelist, recipient of many awards, and the only Pakistani to be nominated for the Man Booker Prize

LAHORE: Renowned Pakistani Urdu fiction writer Intizar Hussain died at a hospital in Karachion Tuesday after a prolonged illness, hospital sources toldGeo News. He was 92.

Known as a novelist, short-story writer, columnist, travel writer, biographer, playwright, and critic, Hussain was born on December 7, 1923 in Dibai, Bulandshahr, India, and migrated to Pakistan in 1947.

He helda Master's degree in Urdu, the language in which hepenned hisshort stories and novels, and was also acolumnist for newspapers in English.

Hussain'spopular writings include "Basti", "Hindustan Se Aakhri Khat", "Agay Samander hai", "Shehr-e-Afsos", "Jataka Tales", "Janam Kahanian" and "Wo Jo Kho Gaye".

He was the recipient of many awards in Pakistan, India and the Middle East, as well as the Lifetime Achievement award at the Lahore Literary Festival in 2012.

In 2013, Hussain becamethe first and onlyPakistani to be nominated for the international Man Booker Prize, and was awarded theFrench civil award Ordre des Arts et des Lettres inSeptember 2014.
