DUBAI: West Indies great Sir Vivian Richards is likely to assume the charge of Pakistan cricket team’s batting coach and mentor before the commencement of World Twenty20, scheduled to take place in India next month.
Our correspondent Abdul Majid Bhatti reported on Thursday that massive changes in the team’s management are expected before the mega event.
Besides Sir Viv, former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mehmood is also being contacted by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to replace current bowling consultant Mushtaq Ahmed.
The former Pakistan leg-spinner is likely to assume the charge of National Cricket Academy’s head bowling coach – the slot that fell vacant following the resignation of Peshawar Zalmi coach Mohammad Akram.
Sir Viv Richards is currently the Quetta Gladiators mentor and had earlier expressed his desire to work with the Pakistan team.
“Waqar Younis at present is doing a great job with the Pakistan team, but if given an opportunity to take up a coaching assignment with Pakistan cricket, I would definitely give it a shot as I believe I have a lot to offer to the game,” he told the Indian media.
He played 121 Tests scoring 8,540 runs with an astounding average of 50.23 with 24 centuries and 45 half-centuries.
The West Indies master, who played a key role in his side’s World Cup triumphs in 1975 and 1978, had scored 6,721 runs in 187 One Day Internationals (ODIs) at an average of 47 with a fantastic strike-rate of 90.20.
