KARACHI: The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) has started with a comprehensive door to door garbage collection system in selected parts of the metropolis.

According to SSWMB Managing Director, Roshan Ali Shaikh the initiative has been taken up on a pilot basis and claims that through this scheme the eyesore of garbage dumped across the city will be curtailed and the residents will be protected against a series of viral infections.

The garbage collection system has been initiated on a systematic basis with properly covered vehicles being purchased for the purpose with designated routes to be covered.

The MD added that concerned citizens have also been motivated to cooperate and to facilitate the pilot project.

Fixed routes and collection times according to Roshan Shaikh will ensure none of the houses along the route are missed.

The MD claims, equal attention is being paid towards transportation of the waste and garbage transfer stations are planned to be built across the metropolis.

Roshan Shaikh highlighted that the same model will be replicated in other parts of the province with equal attention towards safety of public health and recycling of the garbage.

According to an elaborate plan the SSWMB is also looking at generating electricity using specific categories of waste.

Responding to a question, Shaikh revealed that mechanized sweeping of all major thoroughfares is also in the pipeline.
