LAHORE: Waqar Younis, the former fast bowler and outgoing head-coach of Pakistan, said on Friday that he was leaving the country with a heavy heart due to below par performance of the team under his coaching but vowed to return to serve the national cricket again.
Speaking exclusively to Geo News here, he said he always played cricket with great passion and also put hard work into his coaching role.
“Unfortunately results were not up to the expectations,” said the legendary fast bowler. However, he added success rate of the team in Tests under his coaching remained 90 per cent.
“It might not be as a coach but I promise to return to the country to serve cricket [with a different role].”
Commenting on dire state of the national side’s performances in One-Day Internationals (ODIs), Younis said a lot more hard work is required to improve standard in this format of the game.
The former pace spearhead is all set to commentate in the 9th edition of theIndian Premier League (IPL). The 44-year-old has signed a deal with an Indian TV channel to cover this year’s IPL season.
Waqar had stepped down from the post of the head-coach after Pakistan’s humiliating exit from the World T20 at the group stage.
Commenting on choosing a new career path, Younis said this was not pre-planned and ‘when door closes another opens.’
He suggested that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) should form the inquiry committee on team’s dismal performances comprised of all former cricketers. “Otherwise cricket will face the same fate as squash and hockey,” he added.
Waqar Younis requested the Pakistani players to put extra efforts to improve their performance.
