ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Thursday unanimously adopted the 22nd Constitutional Amendment bill, enabling retired civil servants and technocrats to become part of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
The bill was presented in the lower house by Federal Law Minister Zahid Hamid.
The constitutional bill amends Articles 211, 213, 215, 217, 218, 219 and 222 of the Constitution.
Under the amendments, one member would be taken from each provincefor appointment of four members of the commission.
According to the amendments in the bill, grade 22 retired civil servants and technocrats will also be eligible to hold office of the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Like the Senate, the election commission will continue to function for the entire year, the bill says. Half of the ECP members will retire after every two-and-a-half year, it added.
It is worth mentioning that the tenure of the four currently serving ECP members will expire on June 10.
