Congo claimed its sixth victim this year in Karachi on Sunday

KARACHI: Congo virus claimed its latest victim on Sunday when Saleemuddin, a resident of Karimabad, succumbed to the virus, Health Department spokesman Dr Zafar Mehdi confirmed.

49-year-old Saleemuddin was admitted to Aga Khan Hospital on August 18. He was suffering from high fever and headache. The patient died last night, Dr Zafar Mehdi said.

So far six deaths from Congo fever have been reported in Karachi this year.

Health experts urge people to be wary of symptoms like headache, vomiting, red eyes, bleeding and severe body pain. They advise that anybody suffering these symptoms rush to a nearby hospital because early diagnosis can save lives.

Congo virus lives on animals’ skins and is referred to as a tick. Animals with thicker hair are at a higher risk of being infected with the virus.

People visiting the cattle market should cover their face, hands and frequently check their clothing and skin carefully for ticks. They should also use insect repellents and wear light colored clothes.
