KARACHI: In its first, Karachi witnessed a negative environment sample for the polio virus. Meanwhile one polio case was reported this year.
As the year’s last polio campaign kicked off on Monday, Deputy Commissioner of District Central Fareeduddin Mustafa said that the decrease in polio cases had been achieved due to the commitment of workers and authorities.
A six-day anti-polio campaign kicked off today which targets 8.3 million children in Sindh including 2.2 million in Karachi.
More than 6,500 security personnel will protect 3,500 anti-polio volunteers.
So far eight polio cases were reported in Sindh and 19 in Pakistan.
Pakistan is among the only three polio endemic countries in the world, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria.
