WASHINGTON: Richard Holbrooke, the US special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, was taken to the hospital Friday after feeling ill at work, the State Department said.

"The ambassador is at the hospital at the present time. Beyond that we will let you know as we find out more," State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters.

"I just know he was here working this morning. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation," Crowley said.

He said Holbrooke, 69, "felt ill" while working on the seventh floor of the State Department building, which is where US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's offices are.
