Alarming decline in enrolment at government-run schools in Sindh

Over 130,000 girls have dropped out from schools in the last five years

KARACHI: Alarming decline in enrolment at government-run schools in Sindh has come to light according to a Government of Sindh report released on Tuesday.

According to the report, parents of 76,941 students have stopped sending their children to government run schools in the province, at the same time the Sindh Government has claimed to have spent billions of rupees inducting staff in the educational sector.

It states that 4,222,160 students were enrolled in government run schools across the province; however at the end of 2015 this number had declined to 4,145,219 students.

The number of girls enrolled in 2011 stood at 1,758,858 however by 2015 this number had declined by 132,814 to 1,626,039 students. However, the report adds that during the same period 55,873 boys were enrolled in schools across the province.

The net decline in light of the enrollment of boys resulted in nearly 77,000 fewer enrolled students.

The report revealed that over the last five years, from 2011 till the end of 2015, the number of schools in the province declined from 47,557 to 45,447.

Surprisingly, while the number of schools decreased by 2,110, the number of teachers employed by the Government of Sindh increased manifold.

10,000 school teachers have been inducted by the provincial government over the last five years, while a decline of 77,000 students has been witnessed, according to the report.
