Pakistan wins against World XI team in the final match of Independence Cup series

We did it, now world should “do more”
The series was more than just a cricket contest for Pakistan – it was an occasion to show the world that they’re capable of hosting international teams for longer period

LAHORE: The landmark Independence Cup series between Pakistan and World XI ended with the hosts winning the three-T20I contests by 2-1. The series also marked another step towards revival of international cricket in Pakistan.

The World XI team that came to Pakistan comprised five players from South Africa, three from Australia, two from New Zealand and one each from England, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The tour became possible after the success of Pakistan Super League final in Lahore earlier this year, which allowed the Pakistan Cricket Board to showcase the possible security arrangements it could make.

The series was more than just a cricket contest for Pakistan – it was an occasion to show the world that they’re capable of hosting international teams for longer period and it is time for the cricketing world to “do more” for the sport in the country.

During all three matches, the fans expressed endless love for the visiting players, showing how eagerly they were waiting for the return of cricket in Pakistan. From giving standing ovation to the visiting cricketers to chanting “Hashim, Hashim”, the fans enjoyed every moment of the game. Even the four-tier security check and hefty prices of the tickets couldn’t dampen their passion for these matches, what more can one ask for to enjoy a sporting contest?

International Cricket Council Chairperson David Richardson agreed that the situation in Pakistan has improved significantly, which is why the council is also involved in these efforts to revive international cricketing activities in the country.

The security arrangements during these three matches were of top level and in fact, foolproof. The arrangements made by PCB and the local administration ere also worth noticing. The PCB, without an iota of doubt, has displayed remarkable improvement in their capabilities of overcoming the shortcomings.

One could notice the improvement in security arrangement by the PCB – those for the World XI matches were far better than the preparations done for the PSL final, while the latter were a step forward from the measures taken for the Zimbabwe series.

These improvements are a proof that the local administration and PCB have streamlined their matters as per the requirements of an international event.

Now, the PCB should chalk-out a proper framework to completely revive international cricket in Pakistan. Complete revival calls for a full-fledged series, including Test and 50-over matches against an international team.

More importantly, to gain full confidence of the international community, PCB should also take some practical steps to take cricket matches to other cities, mainly in Karachi and Rawalpindi – the two main centres for cricket in Pakistan, after Lahore.

This can be done by first bringing more PSL games to Pakistan, with teams participating in full of their strength. More and more PSL matches in Pakistan will help PCB build confidence in terms of security.

Even though PCB Chairperson Najam Sethi is looking forward to a full-fledged series, this hope needs to be converted into reality.

PCB is leaving no stone unturned in getting cricket back to Pakistan, but it should do more for it. Even the cricketing world should do more for the cause than just issuing statements.
