Bus driver who ran over, killed minor girl in Karachi confesses to crime
Agitated bystanders torched the two buses after one of them rammed into a bike, killing the four-year-old and wounding her father
KARACHI: A speeding busploughed into a motorcycle early Friday morning here on the city's MA Jinnah Road, killing a minor girl and wounding her father, in what authorities revealed was a race between the two bus drivers.
After witnessing the unfortunate incident — which, according to reports, took place down the road in the vicinity of a school — enraged bystanders torched the two buses that were reportedly thundering towards Numaish areabefore one of them crashed into the bike.
The crowd refused to let the fire brigades and members of rescue forces pass through and douse the flames.
According to police sources, the child's body and the injured father were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for medico-legal tests and treatment, respectively.
Geo News learnt that today was supposed to be the birthday of Sakina — her parents' only child.
Driver confesses
Late Friday night, the bus driver — who, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for South Javed Akbar Riaz, was arrested and identified as Muhammad Salim — confessed to his crime, saying he was "embarrassed" about the incident.
"I will accept whatever punishment I'm given," he said, adding that he could not bear to stay after seeing the deceased and subsequently fled.
"I will not run away now."
Muhammad Azam — the owner of the bus — has also been detained, SSP Riaz stated, adding that police have also arrested the persons who torched the buses after the accident.
