KARACHI: A trader was shot and injured in Karachi on Thursday after he reportedly denied paying 'protection money' and disconnected Whatsapp calls from an extortionist.
Tufail, who owns a mobile shop in Saddar area, was on his way home with his brother, Kashif, he told police.
He received a Whatsapp call from an international number with the caller introducing himself as Lyari gangster Zahid Ladla and demanding Rs5 million as 'protection money.'
Tufail disconnected subsequent calls from the same number, soon after which unknown motorcyclists opened fire on his vehicle near Peoples Chowrangi and fled the scene.
As a consequence, Tufail's brother Kashif was injured.
Police have registered a case over the incident under sections relating to terrorism, attempted murder and extortion demanding.
Karachi police chief Dr Ameer Sheikh, while speaking to media, said the case was a challenge for police.
