Drones on airfield prompt UK's Gatwick Airport to pause operations

LONDON: Gatwick Airport in the UK's Sussex has halted its operations, including suspending numerous flights, after reports emerged of more than one drone flying in the airfield, international media outlets said.

"We have had to suspend flights while this is investigated," the airport management said on Twitter.

"We apologise to any affected passengers for this inconvenience but the safety is our foremost priority," it added.

According to the BBC, "Two of the unmanned devices were reportedly spotted near a runway, leading to delays and diversions as flights were suspended.

"Passengers due to take off reported planes being stuck on the Tarmac formore than an hour," the publication added.

"Some inbound flights were holding while others had been diverted," BBC said while quoting a spokesperson.

In response to a customer query, British Airways said: "Gatwick have stopped all arrivals and departures due to a drone, we've been told.

It was "something that's not within our control", it added.
