91279 vehicles fined with over Rs17.4 mln fine in May

RAWALPINDI: Rawalpindi City Traffic Police have given challan tickets to the drivers of 91279 private and public service vehicles on traffic violations while an amount of over Rs17.4 million was collected as fine money from the traffic violators during the last month of May.

Nearly 200 baggers were also arrested from different areas of the city during the period, Chief Traffic Officer, Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Dr Muhammad Azam said while talking to media.

As many as 646 vehicles and motorcycles were impounded in different police stations with arrest of several drivers on severe traffic violations, he said.

Giving the break up he informed that 5626 drivers were challaned for creating hurdle in the smooth traffic flow particularly on busy roads. 3330 drivers were challaned which were on the city roads without driver license. 25 under age drivers were also fined with warning. 3770 drivers were fined for violating traffic signals and more than 6000 vehicles were challaned which were being run either, without number plates or proper number plates, he said. An action, in accordance with the traffic rules, was also taken against 3258 drivers who were using mobile phones while driving the vehicles.

Chief Traffic Officer told that 3930 drivers were challaned on wrong parking charges and violation of other traffic rules. Likewise, 1327 drivers were given the challan tickets on tinted glasses of their vehicles.

Muhammad Azam said that special campaigns were also launched to make the city roads more safe. While ground briefings are also being managed by the traffic police to disseminate awareness about traffic laws and road safety so that the road journey could be made more comfortable and secure.Education Wing of Traffic Police is making efforts in this regard, he added.

He said, a special squad is present and alert to respond the complaints of the citizens regarding traffic. People are also guided and helped on the Help Line 1915, he informed.
