Nawaz Sharif's cardiac ailment has worsened: personal physician
'Nawaz declined Dr Shahbaz Gill's offer for admission in hospital keeping his self-respect most important'
LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif's cardiac ailment has worsened, his personal physician Dr Adnan Khan said Thursday.
Dr. Shahbaz Gill, a spokesman for Punjab chief minister, Mujibur Rehman Shami and two professors of cardiology (PIC & KE) met former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in Kot Lakhpat jail today, Dr Adnan said on Twitter.
"The cardiologists were of opinion that Mr. Sharif’s disease has worsened and he requires hospitalisation for cardiac cath and possible intervention," he said further.
"Dr. Gill acknowledged severity of disease as reiterated by cardiologists & on behalf of Government offered admission in hospital."
Dr Adnan said Nawaz politely declined the offer, keeping his self-respect as most important and in view of treatment meted out to him in previous visits or stays at hospital.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Imran Khan directed the Punjab government to provide the best medical facilities to Nawaz Sharif, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said.
According to Chaudhry, the prime minister told the Punjab government to let Nawaz Sharif be treated by the doctor and at the hospital of his choice. Further, recommendations of the medical board should be implemented.
'Neither have I begged for treatment, nor will ask for it'
On Wednesday, Nawaz told family members visiting him at the Kot Lakhpat jail that he had not begged for, nor would he ask for treatment.
The former prime minister has been imprisoned at Kot Lakhpat jail since December 2018 following his conviction in a corruption reference in line with the Supreme Court’s July 2017 verdict.
Nawaz's mother, his brother Shehbaz Sharif and daughter Maryam Nawaz met the former premier to convince him to be shifted to hospital.
"Neither have I begged for treatment, nor will I ask for it. Politics is being done in the name of treatment," Nawaz told visiting members of his family.
"The insulting behaviour of the government is not acceptable," he said, adding he was being taken to one hospital from another.
The former premier lamented that his treatment was not initiated despite reports from five medical boards.
"The government has not yet provided any treatment facility, [I am] only being troubled," he said.
"I will prefer to die honourably, but humiliation is unacceptable."
