LONDON: Popular British singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran has finally confirmed he is married to his childhood friend and long-time girlfriend Cherry Seaborn, whom he first met at school at the age of 11.

Sheeran, 28, confirmed the news in a Youtube video interview on Friday, the day he released his new album titled 'No.6 Collaborations Project'.

British media had reported earlier this year that Sheeran tied the knot with accountant Seaborn, 27, in December at their home in Suffolk at a small, secret wedding ceremony in which only close family and friends were invited. But neither Sheeran nor Seaborn had publicly confirmed the news—until today.

In the video, then interviewer asks him about some personal lyrics on the song 'Remember the Name', Sheeran answers: "Watch how the lyrics in the songs might get twisted / My wife wears red, but looks better without the lipstick."

"It was actually before me and Cherry got married and I knew that we'd be married by the point that the song came out," said Sheeran.

"[I thought] Someone's gonna hear that and be like, 'Oh, they’re married!' I didn’t know how that would be construed, but obviously it’s already come out."

The two childhood lovebirds were engaged at the end of 2017.

Sheeran were pupils at the same school in Suffolk, eastern England and began dating in 2015.

The ginger-haired Grammy winner has enjoyed a string of hits since his debut album + (Plus) topped the UK charts in 2011 and reached No 5 in the United States.

His single "Shape of You" was 2017's biggest selling single in the UK, according to the Official Charts Company, and "Perfect", featuring Beyonce, was Britain's Christmas No1 last year.

Seaborn, a keen field-hockey player, studied at Duke University in North Carolina and later worked in the Wall Street financial district of New York before transferring back to England.
