Karachi residents face power woes as rain wreaks havoc

Several areas of Karachi witnessed long hours of power outages due to rainfall

KARACHI: Residents of the city faced immense problems due to prolonged power outage throughout the city on Monday after rain wreaked havoc in the provincial capital of Sindh.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the city is set to face more rain in the evening today (Tuesday) with widespread thunderstorms and isolated heavy showers expected in Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Hyderabad, Karachi, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sukkur, and Larkana divisions.

Monsoon currents from Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are penetrating upper and central parts of the country and are likely to intensify over southern parts during the next 24 hours, the PMD added.

Rain lashed several areas of Karachi on Monday including II Chundrigar Road, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Airport, Malir, Sharah e Faisal and Gulshan Iqbal.

The highest level of rainfall, 123.7 millimetres, was recorded in Surjani Town, Saddar received 104 mm of rain, according to the Met office.

At least 10 people were killed including two children in Karachi in rain-related incidents.

According to the Director MET, the monsoon system will likely end on Wednesday and there was not much chance of rain in the first week of August.

Educational institutions to remain closed today

Meanwhile, the Sindh education department announced that schools, colleges, universities and all educational institutions in Karachi would remain closed on Tuesday.

Examinations scheduled at the Karachi University, the province's largest varsity, NED University of Engineering and Technology, and the Federal Urdu University were also postponed. New dates for the examinations would be announced later, said the administration at the varsities.

Following the first spell of rain early in the morning, around 400 feeders of the Karachi-Electric (KE) power supply company tripped. The KE spokesperson said power was being supplied to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board.

In the nearby city of Hyderabad, heavy rains wreaked havoc and roads were mostly inundated. At several places, residents faced sheer difficulties as water entered houses and electric supply was suspended too.
