KARACHI: Parts of Karachi continued to receive rain on Thursday, after yet another spell of monsoon downpour hit the metropolis on Wednesday leaving low-lying areas inundated with water.
As predicted by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), a rain system brewing in the Bay of Bengal entered Karachi on Wednesday, turning the weather from hot and humid to mild and breezy as rain, coupled with thunderstorm, lashed the city.
Around 55 millimetres (mm) of rain was recorded at North Karachi, 42mm in Saddar and Jinnah Terminal, and 32mm at Landhi, Kemari and Surjani Town by Thursday morning.
According to the Met Office, there was a risk of urban flooding due to heavy rain in Karachi, Hyderabad and Thatta divisions.
"Due to heavy rainfall in the range of 50-70 mm (during 1600/Thu-1200 PST/Fri), the situation of urban flooding in Karachi may further be aggravated on Friday, with water logging in low lying areas of the city," the Met Office said in its advisory.
The latest rain spell is expected to persist until Friday. According to the Met Office, the monsoon weather is likely to continue till mid-September in Karachi, and yet another rain system will enter the city from the second week of September.
Rain with wind and thunderstorm is also expected today at scattered places in Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpurkhas, Thatta, Shaheed Benazirabad, and at isolated places in Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Mardan, Kohat, Bahawalpur, Multan, D.G. Khan, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Makran, Zhob, Kalat divisions, Islamabad, Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan.
Hot and humid weather is expected elsewhere in the country.
