NEW YORK: Canadian 19-year-old Bianca Andreescu advanced to the US Open quarter-finals early Tuesday morning by defeating 116th-ranked US qualifier Taylor Townsend 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
The 15th-seeded Andreescu, a champion this year at Toronto and Indian Wells, booked a spot in a Wednesday quarter-final against Belgian 25th seed Elise Mertens, whom she has never faced.
