ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan's adviser on commerce, textile, industries and production, and investment, Abdul Razak Dawood, said Monday the safety and health of industry workers would ensure sustainable development, thus increasing the country’s exports.

“The Dresden Declaration will be a guiding document for moving forward to improve labour conditions in the industrial sectors," Dawood said during aceremony organisedby German organization Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

According to the press release issued Monday by the commerce ministry, Dawood said: “Today’s event was aimed at forging a collaboration between the government and private sector to adopt a pragmatic and action-oriented approach to promote occupation safety and health in the Punjab province.

“We now have a declaration at hand, which demonstrates our commitment to join forces and establish a culture of prevention for the benefit of workers, enterprises and the society, at large,” he added.

The PM's commerce adviser said GIZ’s Labour Standard Programme — through collaboration with the labour and human resource department, Punjab government, private partner organisations, and business community — was providing technical expertise that would support an improvement in the textile and garments industry's working conditions.
