QUETTA: The Balochistan University of Information Technology, Engineering and Management Sciences (BUITEMS) is facing deficit of Rs 142 million after the cut in funds by the HEC.

The current financial deficit has badly affected the educational activities in the varsity compelling us to halt the development projects launched for the students of the varsity, said the Vice Chancellor BUITEMS Engineer Ahmed Farooq Bazai here on Tuesday.

Briefing media about the annual performance 2010-2011 of the university at Takatu Campus of BUITEMS, Vice Chancellor said that the University is totally dependent on HEC grants. "We can collect a mere fraction for university expenses from tuitions fees and research farms.

He maintained that a majority of students come from underdeveloped and far-flung areas of the province and we cannot charge them huge money.

"The Balochistan government has also been taken on board but no such support has been extended as they consider it a federal subject," he deplored.

VC while appealing the Balochistan legislators for their contribution said that if every lawmaker in the province allocates grants from their MPA funds for the students of the varsity, we would be able to deal with the shortage. He said that BUITEMS was committed to providing quality education with its prime focus on research, adding it is also a part of our vision and mission to equip students of the varsity with the art of living as productive member of the society, contributing to the socio economic uplift of Balochistan.

"Strenuous efforts are afoot to bring the IT University of the Province as par with the leading universities of the world through imparting quality education," he stressed.

VC noted that the students of the varsity were being provided with excellent teaching and learning environment enabling them to compete with the students of any university in the world. Currently about 4000 students are enrolled in various disciplines of BUITEMS, he said adding enrolment of 10000 students was part of our mission which would be accomplished in years to come.
