QUETTA: Governor Balochistan, Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi on Tuesday, took serious notice of lack of interest on part of the Deputy Commissioners and Health officers of certain districts in implementing anti polio drive which results in spiraling number of polio cases in parts of the province.

Presiding over a meeting in connection with National Polio Control initiative here, he recommended strict action against the officials evincing negligence towards effective implementation of polio drives in their respective areas.

He described the role of politicians and elected representatives as inevitable to get the country rid of polio and urged them to extend all possible support to make the anti polio initiatives a success.

On the occasion, provincial minister and member Polio Control Committee Shama Perveen Magsi expressed her deep concern over increasing polio cases in the province.

"As many as 38 polio cases have so far been reported from the province despite three-day anti polio drive in every month", she said and described negligence and lack of interest on the part of district administration and the general masses as the main factor behind ineffectiveness of the anti polio initiatives.

Meanwhile, the provincial Health Secretary briefed the meeting about the measures to control polio in the affected districts.

Representatives of UNICEF, WHO, Rotary Club and other concerned officials attended the meeting.
