KARACHI: Federal Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan on Monday said that security forces fighting terrorism have carried out over 10,000 intelligence-based operations and arrested 36,000 suspects since June 2014.
Speaking to reporters in Karachi, Nisar said that some arrests have been carried out in connection to the gruesome bus attack on an Ismaili community bus, but he said that it was premature to say that the main culprits have been apprehended.
"At least those people have come into focus those responsible for this heart-wrenching tragedy. Some (suspects) have been arrested, but it is premature to claim that we have reached the real attackers.
"So far, investigation has been carried out through those who have been arrested. This (investigation) has been very positive, and we have reason to believe that perhaps we are on the right track," he said.
Speaking about the security agencies' ongoing war against terrorism, he said that 10,000 intelligence-based operations (IBOs) had been carried out since June 2014.He added that 36,000 suspects were arrested during the past year.
The fact that they are focusing on soft targets is proof that the operation is succeeding, he said.
Nisar said that it has been decided to review private security agencies operating in all four provinces of the country.
He said that 300 private security agencies with thousands of employees were operating in Karachi alone.
The interior minister said that the personnel of such private security companies were not properly trained or deployed so as to complement and supplement the work of security agencies.
He said that the battle against terrorism was not a T20 or One-Day match but a long-term war. He vowed to bring the culprits behind the Safoora Chowrangi massacre to justice.
