MADRID: Spain will participate in the NATO missile defence system from its naval base in Rota, southern Spain, El Pais newspaper said in its online edition, citing NATO sources.

Statements on the Spanish government and NATO websites said Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and U.S. Secretary of Defence Leon Panetta would announce an agreement on the development of new capabilities on Wednesday on the margins of a defence ministers meeting in Brussels.

No details of the agreement were disclosed.

Over the past few weeks, Turkey, Poland, Romania and the Netherlands have signed up to participate in the missile defence system. (Reuters)
