WASHINGTON: US Defence Minister Leon Panetta said that the country's invasion in Afghanistan toppled the Taliban-led government who had given safe heavens to al Qaeda network.

In a statement issued on the eve of 10th anniversary of the US invasion in Afghanistan, Panetta said that 1800 military personnel were killed while 14000 others injured during the decade.

He said that US forces would remain present in Afghanistan till the restoration of peace in the country.
