KABUL: NATO says one of its soldiers has been killed in a roadside bombing in a restive southern Afghan province.

An Afghan interpreter was killed and eight people injured in a Taliban attack on a U.S.-run civilian and military base in the area.

NATO said the service member was killed early Friday in Kandahar province, a traditional Taliban stronghold.

Separately, the U.S.-led coalition said they and Afghan forces repelled a coordinated attack by the insurgents on the base in Kandahar on Thursday. NATO said its forces returned fire while Afghan police began clearing the compound. Two car bombs went off, causing no injuries.

NATO said the injured are an American civilian contractor, five service members and two Afghan police.
